Understand our design principles
Retriever’s design is based on five core principles inspired by our Scandinavian heritage.
1. Scandinavian/Nordic – Pride in our roots
We are part of a globally recognized design tradition and share it across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. The Nordic region has created everything from iconic furniture by Arne Jacobsen (DK), Alvar Aalto (FI), and Peter Opsvik (NO) to global brands such as LEGO (DK), IKEA (SE), Volvo (SE), Bang & Olufsen (DK), Helly Hansen (NO), and Fiskars (FI). We also have a strong digital presence with brands like Spotify (SE), Kahoot! (NO), Vivino (DK), and Momondo (DK).
These examples are not only known worldwide – they are part of our shared Nordic identity and a reminder that together, we can create something functional, beautiful, and lasting.
2. Simple – Less is more
We remove the superfluous to highlight the important. Minimalism means that few elements create the greatest possible effect. This applies to architecture, graphic design, product development, and communication. We prefer sharp messages to lengthy explanations. We prefer fewer but better things.
3. Functional – Usability over decoration
Form must follow function. If something is not usable, it has no design value. We do not add elements for decoration – everything must serve a purpose. The users’ needs are central to our design, so solutions both work and look good.
4. Original – No copy
We don’t copy. We create. Nordic design is known for its own style – simple, functional, down-to-earth, and human. We use our own images, words, and tone so that our brand feels authentic and unique.
5. Lasting – Think ahead
The greatest Nordic design classics last generations because they are based on simplicity, function, and originality – not trends. We design with an eye for the future so that our solutions remain strong for many years to come.
That was a very brief explanation of our five design principles.
I hope it makes sense.
